Harp Seal, "Pagophilus groenlandicus"

“Blink”
Limited Edition of 195 | Artist Proof 25

After weaning, the abandoned Harp Seal pup cries for its mother but then becomes very inactive to conserve its fat stores. The obese pups will not eat for four or five weeks, loosing approximately 10 kg (22 lb) of body weight. During this period, they will begin to molt, shedding their white coats and becoming a “ragged jacket”. After eighteen days their white coat is completely replaced with a short spotted silvery coat. Then these one to twelve month old pups are called “beaters”.
