At 24,000 mi (38,000 km), the Arctic Tern has the longest annual migration of any known species. Migrating far offshore, it is seldom seen on land except during the breeding season. This member of the Gull and Tern family sees two summers each year as it travels from its arctic and subarctic breeding grounds to the oceans of Antarctica. Reaching 20 years of age, this long lived bird has a worldwide, circumpolar distribution which encompasses a range of approximately ten million square kilometers.
